Kitchen Assistant
Title: Kitchen Assistant Report to: Executive Director Pay: $25 per hour Classification: Part time Anticipated start date: ASAP
Tucked in the forest at the base of Mt. Si, Rainbow Lodge is a non-profit organization that fosters opportunities for guests to experience spiritual, personal, and professional growth in a tranquil and natural environment. We host groups ranging in size from 20 – 65 guests who come from all over the country longing for the radical hospitality and environment that Rainbow Lodge offers.
Responsibilities and Expectations: Teamwork and communication -Ability to learn quickly and follow instructions -Effective verbal and written communication skills -A willingness to both lead and be led. The Kitchen Assistant will work closely with the Food Services Manager, and sometimes will be responsible for managing other cooks and volunteers in the kitchen -Desire to work on a closely knit team environment, interacting regularly with other staff members, including the Executive Director. Enthusiasm for creating a diverse and inclusive workplace is paramount Hospitality -Excellent hospitality and guest services skills. The Kitchen Assistant will regularly be interacting with guests, answering questions, and fulfilling requests -An interest in retreat hospitality, and in the mission of Rainbow Lodge Production -Assist the Food Services Manager in preparing and serving healthy, wholesome, and nutritious meals for all guests at Rainbow Lodge -Follow prep lists prepared by the Food Services Manager to prepare produce, meats, seafood, and other ingredients -Be trained to run meals without the assistance of the Food Services Manager -Handle prepared food during mealtimes, following food safety procedures, to ensure that all guests are fed on time -An understanding of various cooking methods, ingredients, equipment, and procedures -Experience in fast-paced, commercial kitchen environments -Experience with sourdough breads and cakes/pastries preferred, but not required Other -Assist the Food Services Director and Executive Director with other tasks, as needed -Ability to lift 50lbs -Possess a valid Washington State Food Worker Card, or a willingness to obtain one -Maintain a clean and orderly kitchen environment -Availability to work mornings, weekends, and holidays Compensation -This position pays $25/hr. -Up to two meals provided during each shift -This position will begin part time with the possibility of transitioning to full time -Due to the nature of retreat center work, a consistent schedule may not always be possible

Server/ Dishwasher

The Food Services program at Rainbow Lodge strives to fulfill our organizational mission by providing wholesome, nutritious, and delicious meals to all guests. Nearly everything is made from scratch, using locally and ethically sources ingredients when possible. Menus are tailor-made for each group, and always include substantial and nutritious options for people with particular dietary needs. Our team is passionate about retreat hospitality, and its role in creating a more just and equitable world. The Kitchen Assistant should share in our desire to go above and beyond for every guest who visits the Lodge. Retreat Center Staff members are responsible for ensuring excellent guest experiences through both “front of house” and “back of house” roles. The primary responsibilities include setting up and clearing the dining room before and after meals, serving meals and attending to guests’ needs, and dishwashing. Front of House
Retreat Center Staff will clean and set-up the dining room before meals, and break it down after meals
Staff will serve meals to guests at their tables “family style”, and be available to guests during the meals for any questions and requests they might have
Excellent hospitality and guest services skills. Retreat Center staff will regularly be interacting with guests, answering questions, and fulfilling requests
An interest in retreat hospitality, and in the mission of Rainbow Lodge
Experience in a customer service setting, such as a restaurant or café, is helpful, but not required
Careful attention to guests with particular dietary needs and allergies
Back of House
Primary responsibilities include washing dishes in our commercial dishwasher, after and between meals
Putting away clean dishes in their respective locations
Sweeping and mopping kitchen floors, as needed
Taking out the trash and recycling at the end of the night
Other tasks as assigned
Other
Staff will be asked to perform other tasks around the Lodge as necessary. These might include laundry, groundskeeping, and kitchen prep. Efforts will be made to align these requests with the interests and skills of staff persons
Compensation
The starting pay for this position is $16-$19 per hour depending on experience
Up to two meals are provided during each shift
This position is part-time. A range of hours per week is possible. Shifts will be available during daytimes and evenings, and on weekdays and weekends. The ideal candidate might be looking for additional employment to supplement their current job
Due to the nature of retreat center work, a consistent schedule may not always be possible

We host groups ranging in size from 20 – 65 guests who come from all over the country longing for the radical hospitality and environment that Rainbow Lodge offers. Newly launched for 2022, our Site Staff program is geared towards young adults who are interested in some aspect of retreat and conference center work. Site Staff will have the opportunity to work in all of the focus areas below, in order to get a full picture of what it takes to run a center such as Rainbow Lodge. Site Staff will be housed in a furnished residence on our property in the foothills of the Cascade mountains. North Bend, WA is a very popular destination for outdoor activities, and countless opportunities for hiking, biking, swimming, camping, skiing, and more are found in our immediate surroundings. The site staff program is designed as a nine month residential internship, beginning as soon as the applicant is available. Focus Areas:
Radical Hospitality
Working in the kitchen and dining room to serve every guest wholesome and delicious food. This includes kitchen prep, serving, dishwashing, etc.
Acting as a liaison and host to our guest groups. This includes setting up meeting spaces, welcoming guests, orientation, etc.
Stewardship of Building and Grounds
Working as a group to accomplish all housekeeping chores. This includes cleaning guest rooms, bathrooms, common spaces, laundry, etc.
Participating in the upkeep of our grounds. This includes mowing, weeding, watering, trail maintenance, etc.
Communal Living
Active participation in the well-being of the on-site staff community. This includes weekly group meetings, social gatherings, leadership trainings, etc. A desire to participate in community life is paramount to the success of this program.
Capstone Project
Develop a creative project that enhances the experience of Rainbow Lodge. This could include creating a program activity, improving the grounds, leading a fundraiser, etc. The possibilities are endless!
